India sells two main GLP-1 medicines, semaglutide and tirzepatide, under many brand names1. Semaglutide brands include Wegovy, Poviztra, Ozempic and Rybelsus, and generic brands have been sold since its patent ended on 20 March 20262,3,4,5,6. Tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro and Yurpeak; Bloomberg reported that it is still under patent in India, and we found no generic7,8,9. PharmEasy lists Mounjaro and every semaglutide brand as Schedule H medicines, sold only on prescription10,11. Ask a doctor before you start any of them.
Which medicine is in which brand
According to the US labels, semaglutide switches on the receptor for GLP-1, a natural gut hormone, and tirzepatide switches on two hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-112,13.
Brands in India in launch order, from Indian reports, filings and minutes of CDSCO, India's drug regulator2,7,14. The list is not complete. Reports differ on the number of generic brands1,15.

Facts checked on 21 October 2026.
This page leaves out two older GLP-1 medicines, dulaglutide and liraglutide. According to Pharmarack, they held about 4 % and 2 % of Indian GLP-1 sales in the year to April 20261.
Semaglutide generics since March 2026: makers and brands
Novo Nordisk's patent on semaglutide expired in India on 20 March 2026, and generic brands went on sale that weekend6,20,21. Makers and brands, as reported at launch:
- Natco: Semanat and Semafull, in multi-dose vials14,22.
- Eris: Sundae, for diabetes and weight management, in Eris's words14,22.
- Dr Reddy's: Obeda, a pen for type 2 diabetes23.
- Sun Pharma: Noveltreat, for weight management, and Sematrinity, for type 2 diabetes, in Sun's words24.
- Glenmark: Glipiq14.
- Alkem: Semasize, Obesema and Hepaglide14.
- Zydus: Semaglyn, Mashema and Alterme (some reports write Altreme)14,20. Lupin agreed to co-market the same injection as Semanext and Livarise25.
- Torrent: Sembolic and Semalix, as tablets and injections21.
- MSN Laboratories: Semabest, a pre-filled pen, reported in April 202626.
Pharmarack counted 25 brands by April 2026, and a review by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) counted nearly 40 companies1. A July 2026 report counted more than 50 products approved by CDSCO15.
In July 2026, PTI reported that Torrent had announced a voluntary recall of select batches of its Semalix disposable pens, as a precaution27. It was limited to select batches of the 2 mg and 4 mg pens made by Dr Reddy's, which had found a quality issue27. Torrent said patients on treatment faced no risk, and that its other semaglutide products, including its tablets, were not affected15,27. Medical Dialogues reported that Dr Reddy's voluntarily recalled select Obeda batches that were outside their quality specification, because of an impurity linked to the active ingredient15. Dr Reddy's said there were no patient safety concerns15. If a pack worries you, show it to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tirzepatide: Mounjaro and Yurpeak, and why there is no generic
We found no generic tirzepatide in India, and Bloomberg reported in April 2026 that the medicine is still under patent protection here9. Lilly launched Mounjaro on 20 March 2025, and the Mounjaro KwikPen, which holds 4 weekly doses, on 15 August 20257,16. Cipla launched Yurpeak, a second brand made by Lilly, on 11 December 2025, and Cipla said before launch that its price would match Mounjaro's8,28.
PTI reported that Lilly launched Mounjaro in India for two uses29. One is type 2 diabetes; the other, weight management for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition29. In June 2026, CDSCO's expert committee said that removing these BMI limits was not appropriate, because obesity and overweight are defined differently for US and Asian populations30. The page on who should not take GLP-1 medicines gives India's own BMI definition of obesity. If you want to weigh the two medicines, tirzepatide and semaglutide compared sets their trial results side by side.
GLP-1 tablets: what India has and what it does not
India has semaglutide tablets for type 2 diabetes, but we found no Indian launch of the Wegovy pill or of orforglipron, two weight-loss tablets approved in the US5,12,31,32,33. Rybelsus, from Novo Nordisk, comes in 3, 7 and 14 mg strengths, and its US label approves it for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss5,34. The generic tablets of Torrent and Sun Pharma had CDSCO committee recommendations for type 2 diabetes30,35. Torrent says it was the first company in India to launch generic oral semaglutide, and Dr Reddy's launched its Obeda tablets on 20 May 202619,21. Dr Reddy's says CDSCO approved them after a Phase III study in 288 people with type 2 diabetes in India19. A Phase III trial tests a medicine in a large group of patients.
For the Wegovy pill (semaglutide 25 mg), no Indian approval was found either, so this page gives no dose schedule for oral Wegovy32. Medical Dialogues reported a positive CDSCO expert-committee recommendation for orforglipron (Foundayo in the US) in June 202631,33. Our page on how GLP-1 tablets are taken in India has the details.
What these medicines cost: dated price ranges
Novo Nordisk cut its Indian prices from 1 April 2026: according to Storyboard18, the cut averaged about 24 % for Ozempic and 27 % for Wegovy across all strengths36. In Novo Nordisk's price table, the Wegovy 2.4 mg price did not change37. Each row keeps its source's unit, so before you compare two rows, check that the units match.

Prices checked on 21 October 2026. MRP is the maximum retail price printed on the pack.
The GST Council cut GST on most medicines from 12 % to 5 % from 22 September 202540.
Is a generic the same as the brand?
Every generic brand contains semaglutide, the active ingredient of Wegovy and Ozempic2,4,14. PharmEasy says the brands can still differ in strength, form, supporting clinical data and approved indication, that is, the use the regulator accepted11.
In January 2026, CDSCO's committee recommended the generic injections of MSN and Natco, and Torrent's tablets, for type 2 diabetes, not for weight management35. For the two injections, it first accepted their Phase III trial reports in type 2 diabetes35. Sun Pharma says Noveltreat is for weight management, and Zydus says its injection is approved for obesity as well as diabetes20,24.
Natco launched multi-dose vials, while Zydus uses a 15 mg/3 ml cartridge in a reusable pen, so a change of brand can mean a different device14,20,22. Your doctor chooses the medicine, the dose and any change of brand. The semaglutide dose schedule sets out the dose steps, and the semaglutide side-effects guide gives the trial rate of each side effect.
Prescription, and how to avoid fake pens
PharmEasy says all semaglutide brands in India are Schedule H prescription medicines, and that Mounjaro cannot be sold over the counter10,11.
Sources differ on who may write that prescription. A health-ministry release of March 2026 says GLP-1 weight-loss drugs were approved on condition of prescription by endocrinologists and internal medicine specialists, and for some indications by cardiologists only41. A government warning, reported in March 2026, says generic semaglutide must be sold only on a registered medical practitioner's prescription42. For tirzepatide, CDSCO's expert committee recommended a specialist-only condition in 2023; it is an approval condition, not a confirmed national rule43.
CDSCO's advisory of 10 March 2026 prohibits surrogate advertisements and any indirect promotion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs that could mislead consumers or encourage off-label use41. A surrogate advertisement promotes a product without naming it. Off-label use is use outside the approved indication.
In April 2026, Reuters reported that Haryana's drug regulator had seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens near New Delhi44. Reuters could not verify this official claim44. A government backgrounder advises you to obtain these medicines with a prescription, and only through legitimate, regulated channels45.
Names that sound like GLP-1 but are not
Some products carry "GLP" in the name but contain no GLP-1 medicine. According to its PharmEasy listing, Glp 1mg Tablet from Intra Labs contains glimepiride 1 mg, a type 2 diabetes medicine46. The listing names weight gain among its side effects, and the US glimepiride label warns that it can cause severe low blood sugar46,47. Sweating and shaking are signs; the NHS says to treat low blood sugar quickly48,49. Then tell your doctor. If someone may have very low blood sugar and is not responding normally, or is unconscious, call 11249,50. Give an unconscious person nothing to eat or drink49. If you see "GLP" on a pack, check the salt (medicine) name, not only the brand.
On 8 October 2026, FSSAI, India's food regulator, issued notices over the health claims of a protein supplement with "GLP" in its name, Indiantelevision.com reported51. The notices are not a final finding51. See GLP-1 supplements and patches for these products.
