GLP-1 tablets in India: what is sold, what it is for, and how it differs from the injection

GLP-1 tablets found in India are oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill and orforglipron: US approvals, no Indian launch found (Oct 2026).

GLP-1 medicines come as injections and as tablets1. Indian pharmacy listings and news reports up to 20 October 2026 show oral semaglutide tablets of 3, 7 and 14 mg, taken daily and sold for type 2 diabetes2,3,4,5. The weight-loss pills in the news, the Wegovy pill and orforglipron, are approved in the US, and no Indian launch of either was found6,7,8,9. The "Glp 1mg" tablet is glimepiride, not a GLP-1 medicine10. If you have seen a 13.6 % weight-loss figure for a semaglutide pill, check the dose, because it came from a 25 mg tablet11. PharmEasy, an Indian online pharmacy, says every semaglutide brand in India is a Schedule H prescription medicine, so start with a doctor12.

Which GLP-1 tablets exist, and which are sold in India?

Of the tablets in the table below, oral semaglutide (Rybelsus and generics) was found on sale in India2,13.

As of 20 October 2026. US column: US labels. India column: filings, news reports, minutes of CDSCO, India's drug regulator, and pharmacy listings5,8.

Tablet US status India status
Rybelsus (Novo Nordisk) Approved for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss 3, 7 and 14 mg strips for type 2 diabetes, listed by PharmEasy2,5
Generic oral semaglutide Not checked Torrent: Semalix and Sembolic, from 21 March 2026. Dr Reddy's: Obeda, from 20 May 2026. Both for type 2 diabetes, as reported3,13,14,15
Wegovy pill (Novo Nordisk) Approved for weight reduction; daily doses from 1.5 mg to 25 mg No approval or launch found6,8
Orforglipron (Foundayo, Lilly) Approved for weight reduction CDSCO expert-committee recommendation in June 2026, as reported; no launch found7,9

Semalix, Sembolic and Obeda are each also the name of an injection13,14,16. Check the form on the pack.

Generic semaglutide injections followed the reported patent expiry on 20 March 2026; our guide to GLP-1 brands in India lists them13,16,17,18. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Yurpeak in India) is an injection; both US tirzepatide labels list no tablet19,20,21. The US also approves Ozempic tablets for type 2 diabetes; India's Ozempic was reported as a weekly injection5,22.

Tablet or injection: what is different

Under the US labels, a semaglutide tablet is taken every morning on an empty stomach, and the injection once a week at any time of day5,6.

Indian strengths and pen storage: PharmEasy and CDSCO minutes. Water limit: the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Other cells: the US labels for Rybelsus and Wegovy2,5.

Semaglutide tablet Semaglutide injection
How often Once a day Once a week, on the same day5,6
Strengths India: 3, 7 and 14 mg. US Wegovy pill: 1.5 mg up to 25 mg India, Wegovy pen: 0.25 mg up to 2.4 mg2,6,23
Food and drink Empty stomach, up to 120 ml of water, then at least 30 minutes before food, drink or oral medicines Any time, with or without meals5,6,24
Share reaching the blood About 0.4–1 % (Rybelsus), 1–2 % (Wegovy tablet) About 89 %5,6
Storage 20–25 °C, short periods at 15–30 °C, away from moisture India, Wegovy FlexTouch pen: fridge at 2–8 °C before first use, not frozen, according to PharmEasy5,25,26

Do not convert a tablet dose into an injection dose, or the reverse. Even two semaglutide tablets, Rybelsus and the US Ozempic tablets, cannot be swapped milligram for milligram, the US label says5. Rybelsus and the Dr Reddy's tablet contain SNAC, an ingredient that helps absorption, according to the US label and ET Pharma4,5.

The US Foundayo label says to take orforglipron once a day, with or without food7. Follow your own pack's storage line.

Are GLP-1 tablets for weight loss or for diabetes?

In India, oral semaglutide is a diabetes medicine15,27. CDSCO committee minutes record its proposed use in India as better blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, with diet and exercise27. Torrent's tablets were recommended in January 2026 for that use, not for weight management15.

In the US, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are approved for weight reduction, but by 20 October 2026 no Indian launch of either was found6,7,8,9.

Wegovy, semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week, was approved in India on 20 April 2022 as a prefilled pen and launched in June 20256,23,28. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) was launched in India for weight management and for type 2 diabetes, PTI reported29.

For Dr Reddy's tablets, the CDSCO committee observed that only registered endocrinologists are to prescribe them27. A doctor decides whether any GLP-1 medicine fits you.

Do GLP-1 tablets work for weight loss? What the trials show

In global trials, yes, at weight-loss doses not found on sale in India8,9. In OASIS 4, adults on oral semaglutide 25 mg a day had an average change in body weight of −13.6 % at 64 weeks, against −2.2 % on placebo11.

Global trial averages against placebo, not Indian approvals. The trials enrolled different people, so the rows do not rank the medicines, and the last column counts different things7,11,30.

Trial Medicine and dose Weeks Average change in body weight Digestive side effects
OASIS 4 Oral semaglutide 25 mg a day (the US Wegovy pill's maintenance dose) 64 −13.6 % against −2.2 % Any: 74.0 % against 42.2 %6,11
ATTAIN-1 (US Foundayo label) Orforglipron, Foundayo 17.2 mg equivalent, daily 72 −11.1 % against −2.1 % Any, US label trials: 69 % against 37 %7
STEP 1 (injection, for context) Semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week 68 −14.9 % against −2.4 % Nausea only, US label trials: 44 % against 16 %6,30

Each figure is a group average from the starting weight; see how the GLP-1 medicines compare for what it means for one person. ATTAIN-1 used a trial form of orforglipron, so the US label shows its results as "equivalent" Foundayo doses7.

That 13.6 % headline came from 25 mg a day, while India's semaglutide tablets are 3, 7 and 14 mg2,4,11,14. The US Rybelsus label reports a 26-week trial of two of these strengths in adults with type 2 diabetes5. Average body weight changed by −2.3 kg on 7 mg and −3.7 kg on 14 mg, against −1.4 kg on placebo5.

Weight can come back. In the STEP 1 extension, people who stopped semaglutide 2.4 mg injections and the lifestyle programme had regained two-thirds of the weight they had lost a year later31.

How a semaglutide tablet is taken

The US Rybelsus label says to take one tablet a day on an empty stomach in the morning, with up to 4 ounces of water and nothing else5. The NHS gives the limit as half a glass of water, up to 120 ml24. After the tablet, the US label asks for a wait of at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other medicine by mouth5. In many Indian homes, that means the morning chai and breakfast wait too. Ask your doctor how to time a morning thyroid tablet5,24. Under the same US label, the tablet is swallowed whole, never split, crushed or chewed5.

In the US label, Rybelsus starts at 3 mg a day for 30 days, a dose that does not yet control blood sugar5. It rises to 7 mg on days 31 to 60; from day 61 it stays at 7 mg, or rises to 14 mg if blood sugar needs more control5. The US label steps the dose up slowly to lower the risk of digestive side effects5. ET Pharma reported that Dr Reddy's tablets in India are taken as one pill a day, raised gradually4. Under the US label, a missed dose is skipped, and the next one is taken the following day5.

The US Wegovy pill starts at 1.5 mg for 30 days, then rises through 4 mg and 9 mg to 25 mg from day 916. These are US label schedules, not a plan for one person, and the weekly injection has its own semaglutide dose schedule. Your doctor sets your dose.

Side effects, warnings and when to get emergency help

At 7 and 14 mg, two of the strengths sold in India, nausea topped the common semaglutide side effects in the US Rybelsus label's trials in type 2 diabetes2,5. It affected 11 % on 7 mg and 20 % on 14 mg, against 6 % on placebo, and diarrhoea affected 9 % and 10 %, against 4 %5. Severe digestive reactions were reported in 0.6 % on 7 mg and 2 % on 14 mg, against 0.3 % on placebo5.

The tablets sold in India are diabetes medicines2,3,15. The US label says Rybelsus taken with a sulfonylurea or with insulin may raise the risk of low blood sugar, and severe lows are possible5. Signs, according to the NHS, include sweating, shaking, a pounding heart and dizziness24. The NHS says a low needs quick treatment, such as a small glass of fruit juice or a sugary fizzy drink32. Then tell your doctor. Ask how to manage lows with your other diabetes medicines.

Call 112, India's single emergency number, for:33

  • A serious allergic reaction: a swollen throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash, or difficulty breathing (NHS signs)24.
  • Someone who may have very low blood sugar and is not responding normally, or is unconscious32. Give an unconscious person nothing to eat or drink32.

Get medical help straight away for:

  • Severe stomach pain that does not go away, sometimes spreading to the back, with or without vomiting, a possible sign of pancreatitis in the US label5. The US semaglutide Medication Guide says to stop the medicine and call the doctor right away6.
  • Sudden loss of vision, usually in one eye24.
  • Pain in the upper stomach, yellow skin or eyes, fever, or pale (clay-coloured) stools, gallbladder symptoms in the US semaglutide Medication Guide6.

Contact your doctor the same day for:

  • Changes in your vision, if you have diabetic eye disease24.

The US Rybelsus label also warns about acute kidney injury, complications of diabetic eye disease, and lung aspiration under anaesthesia or deep sedation5. Most kidney reports came from people dehydrated by nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea5. The NHS advises telling the doctor or dentist that you use semaglutide before a general anaesthetic or a sedative24.

Some people must not take semaglutide. The US tablet label carries a boxed warning that semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents; whether it does so in people is unknown5. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or with MEN 2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, an inherited condition), must not use these tablets5. Tell your doctor about a lump in the neck, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath, or hoarseness that does not go away5. The US label advises against breastfeeding, because SNAC reaches breast milk and may build up in a baby5. The NHS advises stopping semaglutide at least 2 months before trying for a pregnancy24.

Patients, not only doctors, can report a suspected side effect to India's Pharmacovigilance Programme (PvPI) on its helpline, 1800 180 3024, on working days34,35.

"Glp" tablets and "GLP-1" pills that are not GLP-1 medicines

According to PharmEasy, the "Glp 1mg Tablet" sold in India contains glimepiride 1 mg, a diabetes tablet, and lists weight gain among its side effects10. Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea, which the US glimepiride label says can cause severe low blood sugar, and taking one with a semaglutide tablet may raise that risk5,36. Do not stop it without your doctor. The low-blood-sugar steps above apply.

A US pharmacy journal reported that GLP-1 "booster" supplements generally do not directly activate GLP-1 receptors the way medicines do37. FSSAI, India's food regulator, was reported to have issued notices on 8 October 2026 over a protein supplement with "GLP" in its name38. Those notices are not a final finding38.

Reuters reported in April 2026 that Haryana's drug regulator had seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens, an official claim Reuters could not verify39. The UK's NHS warns that some websites sell fake weight-loss medicines and points people to a registered pharmacy40.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill available in India? No Indian approval or launch of the Wegovy 25 mg pill was found by 20 October 20268.

Is orforglipron available in India? No Indian launch was found by 20 October 20269. A CDSCO expert committee was reported to have recommended it in June 20269.

What happens to body weight on Rybelsus? Rybelsus is approved in the US for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss5. In a 26-week diabetes trial, the US label reports an average change of −2.3 kg on 7 mg and −3.7 kg on 14 mg, against −1.4 kg on placebo5.

What do GLP-1 tablets cost in India? When Dr Reddy's launched its tablets in May 2026, ET Pharma reported prices of ₹99, ₹135 and ₹225 per tablet for 3, 7 and 14 mg3,4. Prices can change.

Which GLP-1 tablet is best? No trial above compared the tablets head to head. A doctor weighs your health and your other medicines.
