A GLP-1 medicine changes how much you eat, not which Indian foods you may eat. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) says semaglutide and tirzepatide reduce appetite and help people feel full for longer1,2. On a plate built mostly of rice or roti, the gap that opens is protein3. ICMR-NIN, India's national nutrition institute, sets the protein allowance for healthy adults at 0.83 g per kg of body weight a day3. Under the US labels, the weekly injection is taken with or without meals4,5. The semaglutide tablet has a stricter food rule, and in India it is sold for type 2 diabetes6,7,8. Your plan comes from your doctor or a dietitian.
ICMR-NIN's sample menus for healthy-weight adults (BMI 18.5 to 23), not weight-loss menus: a sedentary woman of 55 kg and a man of 65 kg, in raw weights3. ICMR-NIN counts one katori as 200 ml3. Protein values are from India's Food Composition Tables 2017 (IFCT). An example of how a day can be built, not a plan for you.
| Meal | Sample day, raw weight (woman / man) | Protein per 100 g raw (IFCT 2017) | Non-vegetarian swap, protein per 100 g raw |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Boiled whole grains 60 g / 90 g; boiled rajma, lobia or chana 30 g / 35 g; nuts 20 g (woman) | Rajma 19.91 g; kala chana 18.77 g; whole moong 22.53 g; groundnut 23.65 g | Whole egg 13.28 g3,9 |
| Lunch | Cereals 80 g / 100 g; pulses 20 g / 30 g, or meat; curd 150 ml or the same in paneer (woman) | Atta 10.57 g; rice 7.94 g; masoor dal 24.35 g; moong dal 23.88 g; toor dal 21.70 g; paneer 18.86 g | ICMR-NIN: 80 g meat can replace 30 g pulses; chicken breast 21.81 g3,9 |
| Evening | Milk 50 ml | Cow's milk 3.26 g; buffalo milk 3.68 g | No swap3,9 |
| Dinner | Cereals 60 g / 80 g; pulses 15 g / 25 g; curd 100 ml | Chana dal 21.55 g | Fish, egg or chicken as the family eats them; rohu 19.71 g3,9 |
| Whole day | About 1660 kcal, 57 g protein / about 2080 kcal, 72 g | Allowance 0.83 g per kg: 54 g at 65 kg | Your target: set by your doctor or dietitian3 |

How this page was checked. This page rests on thirty-eight sources. They come from India (ICMR-NIN tables and guidelines, an expert consensus, regulator, company and news records), the US (drug labels, a joint advisory, Cleveland Clinic), the UK (NHS, MHRA) and PubMed. A Zelta doctor has not yet reviewed this page.
What is the best diet when taking semaglutide?
An NHS diabetes leaflet advises small portions, no fried or fatty food, and eating only to appetite10. In the US-label weight trials of both medicines, everyone was told to eat about 500 kcal a day less and to aim for 150 minutes of activity a week4,5.
An Indian expert panel published India-specific advice in July 2026, with support from Abbott Nutrition International, India11. It advises small, frequent meals, 4 to 5 times a day, instead of large portions11. Eating slowly and avoiding large evening meals can reduce nausea, the panel says11. It asks for more than 2 litres a day of water or non-sugary drinks11. Good-quality protein, it says, includes lean meat, milk, milk products or tofu11. It prefers steaming, boiling or grilling11. ICMR-NIN says cereals supply 50 to 70 % of daily energy in Indian diets, while pulses, meat, poultry and fish supply only 6 to 9 %3.
How much protein do you need on a GLP-1 medicine?
ICMR-NIN's allowance for a healthy adult is 0.83 g per kg a day, which is 54 g for a person of 65 kg3. For weight loss, the Indian panel cites studies in which 1.2 to 1.5 g per kg a day, up to 1.6 g with normal kidney function, preserved lean mass11. A joint advisory of four US societies says 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg has been proposed12. ICMR-NIN says high-protein diets need care in people with kidney disease3. ICMR-NIN's 2024 guidelines, written for the general population, say "use of anti-obesity drugs should be avoided"3.
The Abbott-supported Indian panel calls for structured nutrition support on these medicines, especially for Asian Indians, given their higher risk of sarcopenia, the loss of muscle11. Protein alone is likely not enough without strength training at least 3 times a week, the US advisory says12.
Vegetarian protein on GLP-1: dal, paneer, curd, soya and sprouts
ICMR-NIN says cereals and pulses eaten in a 3:1 ratio by raw weight give all nine essential amino acids3. In India's food tables, brown soybean has 35.58 g of protein per 100 g raw, against 24.35 g for masoor dal and 18.86 g for paneer9. Whole moong, the gram used for sprouts, has 22.53 g9.
Protein powders and "GLP-1" supplements
ICMR-NIN's 2024 guidelines say protein powders are unnecessary for a normal healthy life3. Taken on top of a balanced diet, they will not build more muscle3. On 8 October 2026, FSSAI, India's food regulator, issued notices over a protein supplement with "GLP" in its name, as reported; the notices are not a final finding13. In India, a supplement may not claim to treat or prevent a disease14. Read more on glp 1 supplements.
Can you eat normal food on semaglutide?
Yes, in smaller portions. The US labels pair the medicine with a reduced-calorie diet4,5. Cleveland Clinic, a US hospital, says a large meal on a GLP-1 medicine can cause nausea and a lot of acid reflux15. Eat slowly, because the brain can take up to 30 minutes to register a full stomach15. For reflux, the NHS says not to eat within 3 or 4 hours of bed16. In an Indian kitchen, that means the same thali in smaller katoris.
What to eat when not hungry on semaglutide?
Eat to appetite, but keep up protein and fluids. The US advisory suggests breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours with enough fluids; ginger or peppermint tea may help nausea12. If water with meals fills you up, sip it between meals15. Pale urine is the NHS check17. Chaas and unsweetened nimbu pani are non-sugary drinks in an Indian day11. The UK's MHRA warns that severe dehydration after vomiting or diarrhoea can damage the kidneys18.
Chai and coffee on semaglutide and tirzepatide
No drug-interaction rule in the US Wegovy, Zepbound or Rybelsus labels covers chai or coffee: those sections do not mention caffeine, tea or coffee4,5,6. That silence is not proof of no effect. The NHS nausea list includes a large drink with meals19. Count the sugar in every cup: ICMR-NIN's sample days cap all sugar at 25 to 30 g a day, and its teaspoon is 5 g3.
The tablet before the morning chai
The US Rybelsus label says to take the tablet on an empty stomach in the morning, with up to 4 ounces (about 120 ml) of water and no other liquid1,6. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines6. So the morning chai waits. A missed tablet is skipped, under the US label6. In India, oral semaglutide is sold for type 2 diabetes as Rybelsus (3, 7 and 14 mg) and as Dr Reddy's Obeda tablets7,8,20. We found no Indian approval of the Wegovy pill by 20 October 202621. See glp 1 tablets in India for details.
What happens if you drink alcohol while taking semaglutide?
The NHS says it is best not to drink alcohol on semaglutide or tirzepatide, because it can make nausea and vomiting worse1,2.
Low blood sugar is the second concern. The NHS says it usually affects people with diabetes who take insulin or some other diabetes medicines, and is rare in people without diabetes22. The US Zepbound label adds that it has also been linked to these medicines in adults without type 2 diabetes5. The US labels say insulin or a sulfonylurea, such as glimepiride, may raise the risk4,5,23. For people on diabetes medicines, the NHS says not to drink alcohol without eating22. For them, a drink on an empty stomach at a wedding party is that case. The NHS advice for a person with diabetes who gets sweating, shaking or a pounding heart is to treat it quickly with a sugary drink such as a small glass of fruit juice, then tell the doctor1,22. If someone may have very low blood sugar and is not responding normally, call 11222,24. Give an unconscious person nothing to eat or drink22.
Fasting on a GLP-1 medicine: Navratri, Karwa Chauth, Ramzan, Ekadashi
The only published guidance we found on GLP-1 medicines and fasting covers Ramzan (Ramadan) and diabetes. A South Asian working group updated its GLP-1 Ramadan guideline in 2016, and UK bodies published Ramadan guidelines for diabetes25,26,27. A 2026 paper calls tirzepatide during Ramadan in people with obesity but no diabetes "a critical knowledge gap"28. PubMed searches for GLP-1 with Navratri, Karwa Chauth or Ekadashi, run on 30 October 2026, returned no records29,30,31. So the middle column gives what the sources imply.
In India, the weekly injections come as Wegovy FlexTouch and Poviztra pens in 0.25 to 2.4 mg, and Mounjaro and Yurpeak KwikPens in 2.5 to 15 mg32,33,34,35. Dr Reddy's Obeda pens, for type 2 diabetes, come in 2 and 4 mg36. The timing rules here come from the US labels.
Compiled from US labels, NHS, MHRA, IFCT and the Indian consensus. Customs vary by region and family.
| The fast | What the label and NHS advice imply | What to ask your doctor |
|---|---|---|
| Navratri: nine days of fruit, sabudana or kuttu, often one meal a day | The weekly injection does not depend on food. The Indian panel advises against large evening meals. Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels) | How to spread milk, curd and paneer across the day; whether a planned dose step-up should wait4,5,11 |
| Karwa Chauth: sunrise to moonrise, often without water | The UK regulator says to stay well hydrated throughout treatment; a waterless fast goes against that. Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels). The tablet's empty-stomach morning rule still applies (US label) | Fluids at sargi; when to take the tablet around sargi; what to do if nausea or dizziness starts during the fast4,5,6,18 |
| Ramzan: dawn to dusk for a month | Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels). The NHS tells people on diabetes medicines not to skip or delay meals. Iftar is a large evening meal | Whether any diabetes medicine needs a change; how the tablet's 30-minute wait fits sehri4,5,6,11,22 |
| Ekadashi or a weekly vrat: one day | Same injection rule. Moving or skipping a dose is the doctor's call, under the US labels' missed-dose rules. Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels) | Whether to keep the usual dose day4,5,37 |
| Paryushan: no root vegetables, often one meal | Dal, milk and paneer carry the protein; masoor dal has 24.35 g per 100 g raw (IFCT 2017). Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels) | How to reach protein in fewer meals; the timing of a step-up4,5,9 |
| Intermittent fasting, not religious | No label or NHS page among our sources addresses it. The Indian panel's small, frequent meals and the large-meal facts point the other way. Insulin or a sulfonylurea can raise low-blood-sugar risk (US labels) | Whether it suits your medicine and dose4,5,11,15 |

Festival eating on a GLP-1 medicine: Diwali, weddings and the mithai box
A festival dinner is often large, late and oily. Large meals can bring nausea and reflux15. The Indian panel advises against large evening meals11. At a baraat dinner close to midnight, the NHS advice of no food within 3 or 4 hours of bed is hard to keep16. Eating the dal, paneer or chicken first, then a small piece of mithai, follows the advisory's protein-first idea12.
Some people want to skip a dose for Diwali. The US labels' missed-dose rules differ by product, and your doctor applies them4,37. The NHS says to talk to a doctor before stopping semaglutide and not to stop suddenly1. See stopping Mounjaro weight gain for what happened when trial patients stopped.
When an eating problem needs a doctor, or 112
If you keep being sick and cannot keep fluids down, or have bloody diarrhoea, get medical help that day38. Severe stomach pain that does not go away, with or without vomiting, means stopping the medicine and calling the doctor right away4,5,10. For very low blood sugar with no response, call 112, India's emergency number22,24. The semaglutide side effects guide and the semaglutide dose schedule give the label details.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best diet when taking semaglutide? Small portions, no fried or fatty food, and eating to appetite, as an NHS leaflet advises10.
How to speed up weight loss on semaglutide? No source we read names a food that does. The US-label trials paired the medicine with eating about 500 kcal a day less4.
Can you eat normal food on semaglutide? Yes, in smaller portions. Large meals can cause nausea and reflux; the stomach also empties more slowly10,15.
What to eat when not hungry on semaglutide? Small meals every 3 to 4 hours with enough fluids, and more than 2 litres of fluid a day11,12.
What happens if you drink alcohol while taking semaglutide? It can make nausea and vomiting worse, so the NHS says it is best not to drink1.
How long does semaglutide stay in your system? About 5 to 7 weeks after the last 2.4 mg dose, under the US Wegovy label4.
Does Wegovy help curb alcohol cravings? It is not an approved use in the US Wegovy label, which lists heart-risk reduction, weight reduction and MASH, a liver disease4.
Can GLP-1 cause diarrhea after eating? Diarrhoea is a possible side effect. It is more likely with tirzepatide, and avoiding large or high-fat meals can help12.
Is there a GLP-1 diet plan PDF? This page does not offer one. The ICMR-NIN sample day above is an example; your doctor or dietitian sets your plan.
Can I take semaglutide before or after food? The weekly injection is taken with or without meals under the US label4. The tablet is taken on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 minutes; in India it is for type 2 diabetes6,20.
