GLP-1 market in India: launches, brands, prices and sales over time

₹1,736 crore in the twelve months to April 2026, on Pharmarack's moving annual total (MAT), as reported, from ₹121 crore four years earlier: more than fourteen times, the report says¹. Tirzepatide held 63 % at ₹1,094 crore, against ₹23 crore a year earlier¹. Semaglutide held 30 % at ₹528 crore¹. Dulaglutide and liraglutide held about 4 % and 2 %¹. GLP-1 agonists were 7 % of India's anti-diabetic segment, with 260 % value growth on a moving annual basis¹.

CareEdge Ratings estimated around ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 crore for 2025 in a note of 10 March 2026². The note does not state its basis, so it is not comparable with Pharmarack's moving annual total.

Semaglutide market size in India

₹528 crore on Pharmarack's moving annual total to April 2026, as reported, 30 % of the class¹. Generic semaglutide, injections and tablets together, sold ₹44 crore in April 2026, up from ₹13 crore in March (Pharmarack, as reported)¹.

Three counts, as reported: 25 generic brands by April 2026 (Pharmarack), nearly 40 companies (MDRF review) and more than 50 CDSCO-approved products (Medical Dialogues, July 2026)^1,5,6. Each counts a different thing. Table 1 lists the names, and the hub page on GLP-1 medicines in India describes each.

Company shares of generic semaglutide in April 2026, in the source's order: Torrent 38 % (28 % of injections), Zydus 10 %, Lupin 9 %, Dr Reddy's 8 %, Eris 8 %, Alkem 8 % (Pharmarack, as reported)¹. Only two new generic launches came in April¹.

The patent expired on 20 March 2026 (CareEdge), and Eris and Natco announced generic vials that day^2,3,4. The MDRF review's report gives 21 March; CareEdge and the filings give 20 March⁵. Torrent, Dr Reddy's, Sun Pharma and Zydus followed on 21 March^23,24,25,26.

Most generic approvals in the CDSCO minutes read for this page are for type 2 diabetes²⁰. Sun's Noveltreat is for weight management, and Zydus says the DCGI approved its injection for both uses^24,25. Torrent says it was the first in India with a generic tablet²⁶. Mounjaro sold ₹1,009 crore in the twelve months to April 2026 and ₹102 crore in April alone, with moving annual growth of 4,286 % (Pharmarack, as reported)¹. It led all brands in Indian pharma on MAT, ahead of Augmentin (₹923 crore) and Glycomet GP (₹912 crore)¹. Tirzepatide brands grew 10 % in volume in April 2026 over March¹. No generic tirzepatide existed in India in April 2026³².

Before expiry, originator semaglutide cost about ₹11,000 to ₹16,409 a month (MDRF review, as reported)⁵. By September 2026 the review put generics at ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 a month, by maker⁵.

On 1 April 2026 Novo Nordisk India cut the price of the starting dose of Wegovy by 48 % and of Ozempic by 36 %, to ₹1,415 a week including taxes³³. Across all strengths the cut averaged about 27 % for Wegovy and 24 % for Ozempic, Storyboard18 reported³⁶. The 2.4 mg Wegovy price did not change³⁷.

It was Wegovy's second cut: on 12 November 2025 Novo Nordisk India cut the price of every strength, taking the starting dose to ₹2,712 a week³⁵. Storyboard18 put the late-2025 cut at about 37 %³⁶. Storyboard18 reported the reason for the April cut as competition from generic semaglutide³⁶.

No public count of patients on GLP-1 medicines in India was found by 29 October 2026; the proxies are units sold. Semaglutide units a month rose from about 25,000 in February 2026 to 170,000 in April (MDRF review, as reported)⁵. Generic semaglutide injectable units went from zero in February to 137,000 in April (Pharmarack, as reported)¹.

Units are not patients, so this page gives no patient number. IQVIA's "over 150 million potential patients" is an addressable population, not a count of users⁴¹. The patient pool is on the page of obesity in India statistics.

CareEdge Ratings projects a potential market of ₹4,500 to ₹5,000 crore by 2030, from ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 crore in 2025, nearly fivefold (note of 10 March 2026)². CareEdge also expects prices to fall about 40 to 50 % in FY27 and 10 to 30 % more in FY28².

• 10 March 2026: CDSCO's advisory to all manufacturers prohibits surrogate advertisements and indirect promotion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs⁴².
• March 2026: the government warned that generic semaglutide may be sold only on prescription, as reported⁴³.
• By 24 March 2026: regulators inspected 49 businesses over GLP-1 drug sales, including online pharmacy warehouses and slimming clinics⁴².
• April 2026: Haryana's drug regulator was reported to have seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens, a claim Reuters could not verify⁴⁴.
• 9 and 10 July 2026: voluntary recalls of select batches, as reported: Torrent's Semalix injection 2 mg and 4 mg, made by Dr Reddy's; Dr Reddy's Obeda; and USV's Usema^6,45. Torrent said there was no risk to patients on treatment⁴⁵. Dr Reddy's said there were no patient safety concerns⁶.

How much does GLP-1 injection cost in India? ₹1,415 a week including taxes for the 0.25 mg starting dose of Wegovy and Ozempic from 1 April 2026 (Novo Nordisk India, as reported)³³. Table 2 gives each price by medicine, strength and date.

Is GLP-1 for diabetes? Yes. Ozempic is approved in India only for type 2 diabetes (PharmEasy), as are the January 2026 generics CDSCO's committee recommended^20,40. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management, and Mounjaro was launched for weight management and type 2 diabetes^11,12.

Is Ozempic available again? In India, yes: Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic on 12 December 2025, for type 2 diabetes only^16,40.

Is GLP-1 a tablet or injection? Both. The tablets sold in India include semaglutide for type 2 diabetes: Rybelsus, Dr Reddy's Obeda tablets and Torrent's tablets^20,28,45,46. The Wegovy pill was not found in India by 20 October 2026³⁰.

How much does generic semaglutide cost in India? ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 a month, by maker, in the MDRF review reported on 24 September 2026⁵.

What GLP-1 medications are available in India? Table 1 lists them by date: tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Yurpeak), semaglutide (Wegovy, Poviztra, Ozempic, the generics) and semaglutide tablets^{8,9,10,14,16,18,46}.
