Semaglutide in India: the brands, who makes them, what each is approved for, and what is not sold here

Semaglutide in India: Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Poviztra, Obeda and the generics, who makes each, approved uses, dated prices, and what is not sold here.

Facts checked on 29 October 2026.

Semaglutide is sold in India under at least 25 brand names, and PharmEasy lists every one as prescription-only1,2. According to the US label, semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it binds to the GLP-1 receptor and activates it, and GLP-1 is a gut hormone that regulates appetite3. Novo Nordisk sells it for chronic weight management as Wegovy and for type 2 diabetes as Ozempic; Emcure's Poviztra and Abbott's Extensior are second brands of each4,5,6,7,8. Tablets include Rybelsus and Dr Reddy's Obeda, and generic brands have been on sale since the Indian patent ended on 20 March 20269,10,11.

Semaglutide brands in India, in launch order, from Indian filings, news reports and minutes of India's drug regulator, CDSCO. The list is not complete: Pharmarack counted 25 brands by April 2026, an MDRF review nearly 40 companies, and a July 2026 report more than 50 products1,12. The full list by maker is on GLP-1 medicines in India.

How this page was checked. Fifty-three sources: Indian stock-exchange filings, company and government releases, CDSCO minutes, news reports and pharmacy listings; the US labels for how semaglutide works and for the facts marked US. A Zelta doctor has not yet reviewed this page.

What is semaglutide injection used for?

Semaglutide injection is approved in India for type 2 diabetes (Ozempic, Extensior and several generics) and for chronic weight management (Wegovy, Poviztra and Noveltreat)5,7,8,14,17,20. For the weight use, Zydus's filing names adults whose starting BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition34. Reviewing tirzepatide in June 2026, CDSCO's committee noted that obesity and overweight are defined differently in US and Asian populations, yet kept the BMI cut-offs in its Indian indication35.

Is semaglutide available in India?

Yes. Wegovy has been on sale since 24 June 2025, three years after its approval on 20 April 20224,5. Ozempic followed on 12 December 2025, and generic brands launched the weekend the patent ended, 20 March 20266,11. Tablets are sold as Rybelsus, as Torrent's Semalix and Sembolic, and as Dr Reddy's Obeda since 20 May 20269,10,25. Wegovy in India tracks the two Novo Nordisk brands.

Three products are not sold here. The Wegovy pill, a 25 mg daily tablet approved in the US for weight reduction, has no Indian approval found3,29. In September 2026, CDSCO's committee asked Novo Nordisk India for more data (Medical Dialogues)30. Orforglipron, a daily GLP-1 tablet approved as Foundayo in the US, had a positive CDSCO committee recommendation in June 2026 and no Indian launch found31,32. Generic tirzepatide is not sold here: a Bloomberg report of April 2026 said tirzepatide was still under patent33. Its brands, Mounjaro and Yurpeak, are covered on Mounjaro in India36,37.

The semaglutide patent expiry in India and the generic brands

The Indian semaglutide patent expired on 20 March 2026, and generic brands launched the same weekend11. Their approvals differ: in January 2026, CDSCO's committee recommended MSN's and Natco's injections and Torrent's tablets for adults whose type 2 diabetes was insufficiently controlled, and not for weight management17. Zydus says India's drug controller (DCGI) approved its injection for type 2 diabetes and obesity, and Alkem says the same for its three brands21,24.

In July 2026 three companies recalled select batches. Torrent recalled select Semalix pens in 2 mg and 4 mg, made by Dr Reddy's, after Dr Reddy's found a quality issue26. Dr Reddy's recalled select Obeda batches with an impurity associated with the active ingredient, and USV recalled batches of its semaglutide brand Usema, according to industry sources12. Torrent said there was no risk to patients now on treatment, and Dr Reddy's reported no patient safety concerns12,26. Your pharmacist or doctor can look at any pack that worries you.

Which semaglutide brands does Sun Pharma sell?

Sun Pharma sells Noveltreat, a pre-filled pen in five strengths for chronic weight management, and Sematrinity, a multi-dose pen (one that holds several doses) for type 2 diabetes20. CDSCO's committee recommended Sun's semaglutide tablets in 3, 7 and 14 mg for type 2 diabetes in June 2026; their launch is not in our sources35.

Which semaglutide brands does Natco sell?

Natco sells Semanat and Semafull in multi-dose vials of 2 mg/1.5 ml and 4 mg/3 ml (March 2026) and 8 mg/3 ml (April 2026)16,38. CDSCO's committee recommended Natco's injection for type 2 diabetes in January 2026, after it accepted a Phase III trial report17. Every generic brand by maker is listed on GLP-1 medicines in India.

Semaglutide injection in India: pens, vials and strengths

Pens, vials and reusable cartridge pens are on sale, so if you change brand, you may also change device. Wegovy, Poviztra, Noveltreat and Obeda are pens, in the strengths of the table above7,19,20,39. The US label says the US Wegovy 2.4 mg pen holds 4 weekly doses3. Natco's and Eris's brands come in multi-dose vials, and Glenmark's Glipiq as a vial or a pre-filled pen16,18,23. Zydus's reusable pen takes a 15 mg/3 ml cartridge, and Alkem offers a reusable pen in which only the cartridge is replaced21,24.

Your doctor decides the brand, the dose and any change of device. PharmEasy says Wegovy pens are kept in a refrigerator at 2 to 8 °C before first use and never frozen; the US label gives the same range3,40. The dose steps, taken from the US label, are on the semaglutide dose schedule page; the steps for a pen are on how to use semaglutide pen.

Can you get semaglutide in a tablet?

Yes, for type 2 diabetes. Novo Nordisk's Rybelsus comes in 3, 7 and 14 mg strips9. Torrent launched its Semalix and Sembolic tablets on 21 March 2026 and describes itself as India's first company to launch generic oral semaglutide25. Dr Reddy's launched Obeda tablets on 20 May 2026; it says CDSCO approved them after a Phase III study in India of 288 people with type 2 diabetes10. Under the US label, Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes and not for weight loss41. More on semaglutide tablets in India.

What semaglutide costs in India: dated rows

From 1 April 2026, Novo Nordisk cut its Indian prices, by an average of about 24 % for Ozempic and 27 % for Wegovy42. On 22 September 2025, GST on most medicines dropped to 5 % from 12 %43. Every row keeps the unit its source used, so check the unit before you compare two rows.

Who can prescribe semaglutide in India?

PharmEasy lists every semaglutide brand in India as a Schedule H medicine, the class sold only on prescription, and says Wegovy and Ozempic cannot be bought over the counter2,39. Who may write it is less settled: two government sources differ. The first, a health-ministry release of 24 March 2026, says the approval of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs came on condition that endocrinologists and internal medicine specialists prescribe them, and for some indications cardiologists only48. The second, a government warning reported in March 2026, allows generic semaglutide to be sold only against a prescription from a registered medical practitioner49. For Dr Reddy's oral semaglutide, CDSCO's committee observed that it is to be prescribed only by registered endocrinologists50. This page cannot resolve the difference; your doctor will know which condition applies to your brand.

An advisory that CDSCO sent every manufacturer on 10 March 2026 bans surrogate advertisements, which promote a product without naming it, and indirect promotion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs that could mislead or encourage off-label use48. By 24 March 2026, regulators had inspected 49 businesses, slimming clinics among them48. Near New Delhi, Haryana's drug regulator was reported by Reuters in April 2026 to have seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens, an official claim Reuters could not verify51. A government backgrounder advises you to see a qualified medical specialist before use and to get these medicines only on prescription, from legitimate, regulated channels52.
