Wegovy and Ozempic in India: which products are available, approved or not approved, by date

Is Wegovy or Ozempic available in India? A dated status table of 11 products: launch date, approved use, maker, pen and sourced price. Checked Oct 2026.

Facts checked on 29 October 2026.

Wegovy is sold in India as a weekly injection; Novo Nordisk launched it on 24 June 20251. Ozempic, the same medicine in strengths up to 1 mg, has been sold here since 12 December 2025 for type 2 diabetes2,3. The Wegovy pill is not approved here4,5. On 23 September 2026, the expert committee of CDSCO, India's drug regulator, asked Novo Nordisk for more data on it4. If no bioequivalence study had been done in India, it recommended one in Indian participants4. Orforglipron has a committee recommendation only6. Both brands contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist in the US label's words, and PharmEasy lists both as Schedule H prescription medicines7,8,9. The table gives eleven products' status; your doctor decides whether any is for you.

Status as reported in CDSCO minutes, company filings and Indian news reports, read between 20 October and 29 October 202610,11,12. Products on sale come first, in order of Indian launch, then those not sold. The list is not complete; GLP-1 medicines in India lists the generic brands. Prices are as reported on the dates shown, not an offer.

Wegovy in India: the pen, its strengths and what it costs on a named date

CDSCO's committee records that Wegovy has been approved in India since 20 April 2022 for chronic weight management in adults10. The approved form is a prefilled pen in 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.7 and 2.4 mg10. Novo Nordisk launched it on 24 June 20251. PharmEasy says the FlexTouch pen gives several weekly doses, each strength being one step of the dose schedule8. The US label's own pen holds 4 weekly doses of 2.4 mg; that is the US pack7. The steps are on the semaglutide dose schedule page, and the injection on how to use semaglutide pen.

Novo Nordisk cut its Indian prices from 1 April 2026; the 2.4 mg Wegovy price did not change22.

Weekly prices with taxes, Novo Nordisk India's table of 1 April 2026 (Indian Pharma Post; BioSpectrum India)21,22. The cut averaged about 27 % for Wegovy and 24 % for Ozempic38.

Is Wegovy available in India?

Yes, as a weekly injection since 24 June 2025; no, as a pill: CDSCO's committee asked Novo Nordisk for more data on it on 23 September 20261,4. Emcure sells the same medicine as Poviztra under a deal with Novo Nordisk announced in November 202520.

Poviztra's launch across India was reported on 22 December 2025, with Emcure as exclusive distributor12. Emcure's launch statement priced it from ₹8,790 a month for 4 weekly doses12. Emcure revised the prices from 3 April 2026, when the monthly MRP with taxes became ₹3,999 at 0.25 mg and ₹8,999 at 2.4 mg26.

Ozempic in India: for type 2 diabetes, in three strengths

Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic in India on 12 December 2025, with the 0.25 mg weekly injection at ₹2,200, The South First reported2. It is sold in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg for type 2 diabetes, and the 2.4 mg dose stays under the Wegovy brand, the company's India head told CNBC-TV183. PharmEasy says Ozempic is approved in India only for type 2 diabetes and is a Schedule H medicine9.

Two things on the US label are not among the strengths reported in India3. One is the 2 mg weekly dose for type 2 diabetes; the other is the Ozempic tablet, in 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg39,40. Abbott announced Extensior, a second Ozempic brand for type 2 diabetes, on 27 February 2026, with a pen in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg11,36. That release said the product was expected soon; no launch has been reported since36.

Ozempic in India: two availability checks

Is Ozempic available in India?

Yes, since 12 December 2025, for type 2 diabetes2,3. PharmEasy says that is its only approved use here9.

Is Ozempic available again?

Yes. Novo Nordisk has sold Ozempic in India since 12 December 2025, and generic semaglutide has been on sale since 20 March 20262,27. Ozempic's price fell from 1 April 202638. In February 2026, Business Today reported that Novo Nordisk acknowledged initial supply constraints during early launch phases in India, without naming a brand, and said capacity had since been strengthened41. If you need today's stock, ask your pharmacy; our sources do not cover it.

Is Ozempic a GLP-1?

Yes. Semaglutide, the medicine in Ozempic, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it binds to and switches on the receptor for GLP-1, a natural gut hormone, the US label says7. Cells in the gut release GLP-1 when you eat42. Tirzepatide, in Mounjaro and Yurpeak, switches on two receptors, GIP and GLP-1 (US label), so it is a GLP-1 medicine of a different kind16,23,43. Two older GLP-1 medicines, dulaglutide and liraglutide, are still sold here, with about 4 % and 2 % of Indian GLP-1 sales to April 202629. The hub on semaglutide in India covers every brand.

Is Ozempic another name for semaglutide?

Ozempic is a brand name; semaglutide is the medicine inside it2. Wegovy, Poviztra, Rybelsus, Obeda and the generics are other semaglutide brands sold in India1,13,20,32,44.

Is GLP-1 the same as Ozempic?

No. GLP-1 is the hormone; Ozempic is one brand of one medicine that acts on its receptor7,42. In India the same molecule is Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes3,10.

Is Ozempic a medicine for diabetes?

Yes. In India it is sold in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg for type 2 diabetes, its only approved use here according to PharmEasy3,9.

Which GLP-1 is available in India?

Four molecules in our sources. Semaglutide is sold as Wegovy and Poviztra for weight management, as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, and as Rybelsus and Obeda tablets1,2,13,20,33. The generic brands are on the GLP-1 medicines in India page44. Tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro and Yurpeak; see Mounjaro in India16,23. The older dulaglutide and liraglutide are still sold, with small shares of sales29. Not available: the Wegovy pill, orforglipron, and any generic tirzepatide; Bloomberg reported tirzepatide is still under patent here4,6,45. See semaglutide tablets in India for the tablets that do exist.

How a prescription for Wegovy or Ozempic works in India

PharmEasy says every semaglutide brand sold in India, branded or generic, injection or tablet, is a Schedule H prescription medicine9. Rule 65 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, as reproduced on Indian Kanoon, bars retail sale of a Schedule H substance except on a registered medical practitioner's prescription46. The pharmacy must record the supply in a prescription register and write the entry's serial number on your prescription47.

Who may write the prescription is less settled. A health-ministry release of 24 March 2026 says GLP-1 weight-loss drugs were approved on condition of prescription by endocrinologists and internal medicine specialists, and for some indications by cardiologists48. For tirzepatide, CDSCO's expert committee recommended a specialist-only condition in 2023; that is an approval condition with no confirmed national scope49. A government warning of March 2026, in a secondary summary of an Indian Express report, said generic semaglutide may be sold only on a registered medical practitioner's prescription50.

The ministry's release of 24 March 2026 also says concerns had emerged about on-demand sale of generic GLP-1 drugs through pharmacies, online platforms, wholesalers and wellness clinics48. Without medical supervision, it says, these drugs may cause serious adverse effects48. On 10 March 2026, CDSCO's advisory prohibited surrogate advertisements and indirect promotion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, so no brand is recommended here48. A PIB backgrounder advises you to consult a qualified medical specialist and to obtain these medicines on prescription through regulated channels51. Fake pens: the Haryana case and how to avoid them

In April 2026, Reuters reported that Haryana's drug regulator had seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens near New Delhi, sold on an online marketplace52. The primary accused had no pharmaceutical licence52. Reuters could not verify the official claim52. PharmEasy says counterfeit GLP-1 pens have been reported in India in 202653. It advises buying only on a prescription from a licensed pharmacy and avoiding unverified websites, social media and unauthorised sellers53.

If you suspect a side effect from any pen, you can report it to India's Pharmacovigilance Programme (PvPI) as a patient54. The helpline is 1800 180 3024 on working days, and the ADR PvPI Android app also takes reports54,55. Tell your doctor as well. No maker's pen-verification method is in our sources.
