Mounjaro and Yurpeak: who makes them and when they arrived
By Cipla's stock-exchange filing of 23 October 2025, Lilly manufactures and supplies Yurpeak; Cipla distributes and promotes it as the second brand of tirzepatide in India2. The filing says the price will be the same as Mounjaro2. The entity table shows the same MRPs for both4,6.
Cipla launched Yurpeak on 11 December 2025, after Lilly received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), BioVoice reported5,12. Yurpeak is not a generic2.
The MRPs above were listed in October 2026, after the GST cut of 22 September 2025, from 12 % to 5 % on most medicines4,15. For the semaglutide brands, Wegovy, Poviztra, Ozempic and the generics, see GLP-1 medicines in India16,17,18.
What Mounjaro is approved for in India, and the BMI condition
PTI reported two Indian uses for Mounjaro: type 2 diabetes, and weight management in adults whose body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more, or 27 or more alongside a weight-related condition8. Cipla's filing for Yurpeak repeats the indication and the cut-offs of 30 and 272.
In June 2026, CDSCO's expert committee kept the cut-off: removing it was not appropriate, it said, since US and Asian populations define obesity and overweight differently9. A government backgrounder of April 2026 defines overweight as a BMI of 23.00 to 24.99 and obesity as 25 or more19. So you can be obese by India's definition and still sit below the cut-off in Mounjaro's Indian indication8,19.
The US Zepbound label also lists moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity13; PTI reported no such use for India8. Our page on who should not take semaglutide sets India's BMI definition against the label cut-offs in more detail.
Mounjaro KwikPen: 2.5 mg, 5 mg and the dose steps
The Mounjaro KwikPen sold in India holds 4 weekly doses at one strength, so one pen covers 4 weeks3,4. Both Indian pens come in the six strengths listed in the first table2,4.
How many doses does one Mounjaro KwikPen contain?
Four. The US Mounjaro label says each KwikPen holds 2.4 mL and provides 4 doses of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 or 15 mg, each dose 0.6 mL10. Never share a KwikPen between patients, even with a new needle, the US label says10.
Is Mounjaro 2.5 mg a starting dose?
Yes, under the US labels. In India, 2.5 mg is sold as a KwikPen and a vial4. The US Mounjaro label starts tirzepatide at 2.5 mg once weekly10. The US Zepbound label, which covers weight management, keeps 2.5 mg for 4 weeks, then raises the dose in 2.5 mg steps with at least 4 weeks on each13. Its maintenance doses for weight reduction are 5, 10 or 15 mg a week; the maximum for all uses is 15 mg a week13. The US Mounjaro label raises the dose in the same 2.5 mg steps when more blood-sugar control is needed, up to the same adult maximum of 15 mg10. These are US label schedules; your doctor sets the dose. The US Zepbound label does not recommend tirzepatide together with another tirzepatide product or any GLP-1 medicine13.
If a dose is missed, the US Mounjaro label says to take it as soon as possible within 4 days (96 hours)10. After that, it says to skip it and take the next dose on the usual day10.
Storage, from the same US label: keep an unopened KwikPen in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C10. At room temperature up to 30°C, an unopened pen is thrown away after 30 days10. An opened pen is thrown away after 30 days in total at room temperature, 30 days after first use, or after 4 doses, even if medicine remains10. For single-dose pens and vials, such as the Mounjaro vials sold in India, the US label's limit at up to 30°C is 21 days in total4,10. Check where you keep it against that 30°C limit10.
Lilly's KwikPen steps are on our pen page: mounjaro kwikpen how to use. Semaglutide doses are in the semaglutide dose schedule.
What the trials showed, and who paid for them
In SURMOUNT-1, adults without diabetes lost an average of 15.0 % of their weight on 5 mg, 19.5 % on 10 mg and 20.9 % on 15 mg at 72 weeks20. The placebo group lost 3.1 % on average20. The trial enrolled 2,539 adults with an average BMI of 38.0; Eli Lilly supported it20. Its entry rule, a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related problem, matches the cut-offs in Mounjaro's Indian indication8,20. Half of those on 10 mg and 57 % on 15 mg lost at least 20 % of their weight, against 3 % on placebo20.
In adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes (SURMOUNT-2), the average losses at 72 weeks were 12.8 % on 10 mg and 14.7 % on 15 mg, against 3.2 % on placebo21.
In the head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, average weight loss at 72 weeks was 20.2 % on tirzepatide against 13.7 % on semaglutide, in 751 adults with obesity and without type 2 diabetes22. Eli Lilly funded it, and it was open-label: everyone knew which medicine they were taking22,23.
In SURMOUNT-4, adults who completed a 36-week lead-in on tirzepatide had lost 20.9 % on average24. Those then switched to placebo regained 14.0 % on average by week 88, while those who stayed on tirzepatide lost a further 5.5 %24.
How much weight can you lose on tirzepatide in 3 months?
Most trials this page cites report results at 72 weeks20. The first 20 weeks of SURMOUNT-1 were spent raising the dose in steps20. So this page gives no three-month number. Our tirzepatide vs semaglutide page compares the two medicines and their Indian brands side by side, and stopping mounjaro weight gain covers the regain data.
Mounjaro side effects: the label rates in brief
In the US Zepbound label's weight-loss trials, nausea affected 25 % on 5 mg, 29 % on 10 mg and 28 % on 15 mg, against 8 % on placebo13. Vomiting: 8, 11 and 13 % against 2 %; diarrhoea 19, 21 and 23 % against 8 %; constipation 17, 14 and 11 % against 5 %13. Hair loss: 4 to 5 % against 1 %13. In two pooled trials, 4.8 %, 6.3 % and 6.7 % of people on those doses stopped for good because of side effects, against 3.4 % on placebo13. Most stopped in the first few months, for digestive effects13.
Serious but less common: the UK's National Health Service (NHS) lists pancreatitis and gallstones or an inflamed gallbladder25. The US label's boxed warning, its strongest kind, says tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rats; whether it does so in people is unknown13. The US label says people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or with MEN 2, an inherited gland-tumour condition, must not take it13. Tell your doctor about a lump in the neck, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath or a hoarse voice that does not go away13.
Signs that need help now
A swollen throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash or difficulty breathing can be a serious allergic reaction: call 112, India's emergency number, now25,26. Severe stomach pain that does not go away, with or without vomiting: the US Medication Guide says stop the medicine and call your doctor right away13. Pain in the upper stomach, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-coloured stools: the same US Medication Guide says tell your doctor right away13. With insulin or a sulfonylurea, the US label warns that tirzepatide may raise the risk of low blood sugar, including severe episodes13. Signs include sweating, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or confusion, the NHS says25. Treat it quickly with a sugary drink, such as a small glass of fruit juice, as the NHS advises; then tell your doctor27. Report any suspected side effect to the helpline of India's Pharmacovigilance Programme (PvPI), 1800 180 3024, on working days, as well as to your doctor28,29. More on Mounjaro side effects.
Prescription, the specialist condition and fake pens
PharmEasy lists Mounjaro and Yurpeak as Schedule H medicines, not sold over the counter4,6. Who may write the prescription is less settled. The health ministry said on 24 March 2026 that GLP-1 weight-loss drugs were approved on condition that an endocrinologist or internal medicine specialist prescribes them, or for some uses a cardiologist30. For tirzepatide, CDSCO's expert committee set that condition in April 2023, when it recommended permission to import and market the six strengths31. It is an approval condition; whether it binds every pharmacy as a national rule is not confirmed31.
The government's April 2026 backgrounder advises you to consult a qualified specialist first and to obtain these medicines on prescription, through legitimate, regulated channels19. PharmEasy says fake GLP-1 pens have been reported in India in 202632. In April 2026, Reuters reported a claim it could not verify: Haryana's drug regulator said it had seized over 260 suspected fake Mounjaro pens near New Delhi33.
On 10 March 2026, CDSCO issued an advisory to all manufacturers that prohibits surrogate advertisements and indirect promotion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs30. That is one reason this page names both brands and recommends neither. Your doctor decides whether tirzepatide suits you, which brand, and at what dose. Talk to a Zelta specialist to start that conversation.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mounjaro a GLP-1 agonist? Yes. It switches on two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, the US label says13; the UK's NHS calls it a dual agonist25.
What GLP-1 medications are available in India? Tirzepatide as Mounjaro and Yurpeak; semaglutide as Wegovy, Poviztra, Ozempic, Rybelsus and the generic brands sold since March 20261,5,16,17,18,34,35. Dulaglutide and liraglutide are also still sold36. The full list is on GLP-1 medicines in India.
Is semaglutide better or worse than tirzepatide? In the head-to-head trial SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide gave more weight loss: 20.2 % against 13.7 % on average at 72 weeks22. Lilly, tirzepatide's maker, funded the trial and ran it open-label22,23. tirzepatide vs semaglutide has the detail.
Do people lose more weight on Mounjaro or Ozempic? No trial in our sources compares Mounjaro with Ozempic. SURMOUNT-5 compared tirzepatide with semaglutide at 1.7 or 2.4 mg in adults with obesity and without type 2 diabetes; in India, 2.4 mg is sold as Wegovy22,37.
Is Wegovy available in India? Yes, as an injection: Novo Nordisk launched Wegovy here on 24 June 202516. We found no Indian approval or launch of the Wegovy pill by 20 October 202638. See Wegovy in India.
Two more questions, from the pharmacy pages readers land on:
Is there a generic Mounjaro in India? No. Tirzepatide is still under patent protection in India, Bloomberg reported in April 20267.
Is Zepbound available in India? Zepbound is the US brand name of tirzepatide for weight management13. In India the two brands are Mounjaro and Yurpeak, as Cipla's filing records2.
