How to use a semaglutide pen in India: the pens sold here, and the steps for each pen type

How to inject a semaglutide pen depends on its type, so start with your brand's row in the table. A FlexTouch has a dose selector and a dose counter¹⁰. A KwikPen's knob turns until it stops at the weekly dose¹¹. On Indian Wegovy and Mounjaro pens, the printed strength is the weekly dose^1,8. On some generic packs it is the whole pen: Obeda's 2 mg and 4 mg pens each give at least 4 weekly doses¹⁸. This page has no step list for Ozempic, Obeda, Noveltreat, Sematrinity, Semabest or Zydus pens: follow the leaflet in your pack. Tablets are swallowed^25,26.

The US Wegovy label says to inject under the skin of the stomach (abdomen), thigh or upper arm, once a week on the same day, at any time, with or without food¹⁰. The site changes with each dose, and the pen is not used without the healthcare provider's training¹⁰.

How to give semaglutide injection in belly?

How to give a semaglutide injection with a pen in the belly: the US Wegovy and Mounjaro instructions keep it 2 inches (5 cm) from the belly button^10,11. The US Wegovy instructions allow the same area each week but not the same spot, and the skin is wiped with an alcohol swab first¹⁰. The Mounjaro instructions say another person should give an injection in the back of the upper arm¹¹.

The steps below on how to use a semaglutide injection pen of this type come from the US Wegovy label's Instructions for Use (DailyMed, 18 June 2026). Each of Wegovy's five strengths in India is one step of the semaglutide dose schedule^1,27. Emcure's Poviztra is the same medicine in the same five strengths, but its filing does not name the pen type, so check its leaflet^12,13.

1. Check the name and label show the prescribed dose, pull off the cap, and see clear, colourless medicine¹⁰.
2. Attach a new needle and remove both needle caps, or no medicine is injected¹⁰.
3. Check the flow once with each new pen: turn to the flow check symbol, hold the needle up, press until the counter shows 0, and look for a drop¹⁰.
4. With no drop, the label allows two more checks, then a new needle and one more. Still none: the pen is not used¹⁰.
5. Turn the selector until the counter shows the dose the doctor prescribed; clicks are not counted¹⁰.
6. If the counter stops short, too little medicine is left for a full dose and the pen is thrown away¹⁰.
7. Insert the needle, press and hold until the counter shows 0, then keep pressing and count slowly to 6¹⁰.
8. If 0 never appears, the needle may be blocked and no medicine was received¹⁰.
9. Unscrew the needle without recapping it, put it in a sharps container, and cap the pen¹⁰.

After the US pen's four doses, medicine may remain, and it is thrown away¹⁰.

Mounjaro and Yurpeak contain tirzepatide, not semaglutide. Each Mounjaro KwikPen holds 4 weekly doses of one fixed strength, so a dose step-up means a new pen of the next strength^8,11. 1. Check the pen: name and strength must match the prescription; expired, frozen, cloudy or discoloured medicine is not used¹¹.
2. Attach a new pen needle and keep its outer shield; the US box has no needles¹¹.
3. Prime once before every weekly injection: turn the knob until 2 clicks and the extended line show¹¹.
4. Hold the needle up, push the knob in until it stops and count to 5; a drop at the tip means the pen is primed¹¹.
5. With no drop, prime no more than 2 more times, then change the needle and try once more¹¹.
6. Turn the knob until it stops and the icon shows. That is the weekly dose, and clicks are not counted¹¹.
7. Insert the needle, push the knob in until it stops and count to 5; the icon must show before the needle comes out¹¹.
8. No icon after the needle comes out: it goes back in to finish, without redialling. If the dose still seems short, the label says not to repeat it¹¹.
9. Carefully replace the outer needle shield, unscrew the capped needle into a sharps container, and replace the pen cap¹¹.

After 4 doses the pen is thrown away with its leftover medicine¹¹. Whether Yurpeak's leaflet matches Lilly's was not checked¹⁵.

These pens reached India in March and April 2026. Our sources are launch statements, not leaflets, so no step list is given: follow the leaflet in your pack^3,18,19,22. In July 2026, Dr Reddy's and Torrent were reported to recall select batches of Obeda and Torrent's Semalix injection^21,28. Dr Reddy's said there were no patient safety concerns, and Torrent called its recall a precaution^21,28. Every brand is listed in GLP-1 medicines in India.

Our sources give no Ozempic pen storage rule, so its pack leaflet is the guide. Before first use, Wegovy and Mounjaro pens go in a fridge at 2–8 °C, and a frozen pen is not used^8,10,11,27. After first use, the US Wegovy label allows 56 days at 15–30 °C or in the fridge¹⁰. Its instructions say to throw the pen away if it has been above 30 °C, so in a room hotter than that, the opened pen stays in the fridge¹⁰.

It depends on the pack. Indian packs were not checked. The US Mounjaro KwikPen box has none: its instructions list a "KwikPen-compatible pen needle (not included)"¹¹. The US Wegovy pack includes NovoFine Plus 4 mm needles, and its instructions accept other compatible needles up to 8 mm¹⁰. So a semaglutide injection needle is a pen needle made for your pen type; ask the prescriber which^10,11. Both US labels say one needle per injection, never reused, never left on the pen^10,11.

Missed dose. Under the US Wegovy label, one missed dose is taken as soon as possible if the next is more than 2 days away, and skipped if less¹⁰. After 2 or more missed doses in a row, the label restarts the step-up at a lower dose, and the Medication Guide says to contact the provider¹⁰. The US Ozempic label uses a 5-day window and the US Mounjaro label 4 days^11,29. Under the US label, a missed tablet dose is skipped³⁰. PharmEasy's Indian page says to follow the prescribing information or call your doctor²⁷. The semaglutide dose schedule has the full table.

Wrong dose. For too much semaglutide, the US Wegovy Medication Guide lists severe nausea, vomiting and low blood sugar, and says to call the healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away¹⁰. The US Wegovy label names no antidote, and both US labels say a period of observation may be necessary, possibly prolonged for semaglutide^10,11. After a short or missing dose, call the prescribing doctor the same day.

How urgent, by sign:

• Call 112, India's emergency number, for a swollen throat or tongue, a raised itchy rash or difficulty breathing; the NHS lists this allergic reaction for both medicines^31,32,33. Call 112 too if someone may have very low blood sugar and is not responding normally or is unconscious^33,34. Give an unconscious person nothing to eat or drink³⁴.
• Stop the medicine and call the doctor right away for severe stomach pain that does not go away, with or without vomiting. The US Wegovy and Zepbound (tirzepatide) Medication Guides say so^10,35. An NHS leaflet says it may reach the back and may mean an inflamed pancreas³⁶.
• Treat at once, then tell the doctor: sweating, shaking, a pounding heart or dizziness in a person with diabetes may be low blood sugar³¹. The NHS says to take a sugary drink such as a small glass of fruit juice³⁴. The US Wegovy label says the risk may rise with insulin or a sulfonylurea¹⁰.
• Report any suspected side effect to India's PvPI helpline, 1800 180 3024, on working days, and patients can report, not only doctors^37,38.

India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 name hospitals, clinics and dispensaries among those they cover³⁹. One clause covers homes: household healthcare waste goes in separate bags or containers to municipal collectors, and urban local bodies are to arrange pick-up³⁹. Whether collectors, pharmacies or hospitals take used needles back was not checked. The US labels say used needles go in a sharps container right away, Lilly's never loose in the bin, and the Wegovy instructions say not to recap them^10,11. Without a sharps container, the US Wegovy instructions allow a heavy-duty plastic container with a tight, puncture-resistant lid¹⁰. Ask the hospital or pharmacy that supplies your pen where a full container can go.

India's Press Information Bureau advises buying GLP-1 medicines only on prescription, through legitimate, regulated channels⁴⁰. In April 2026, Reuters reported that Haryana's drug regulator had seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro pens near New Delhi, a claim Reuters could not verify⁴¹. Is it better to take Ozempic at night or in the morning? Either, under the US Ozempic label: once a week on the same day, at any time of day, with or without meals²⁹.

How to inject semaglutide with an insulin syringe? The vials Eris sells, and Natco planned, are drawn with a syringe²³. The US Wegovy instructions say never to draw medicine from a pen with a syringe¹⁰.

Can I lose 20 lbs in 2 months on semaglutide? No source here gives a 2-month figure; the earliest, STEP 4's 20-week run-in, in which most people reached semaglutide 2.4 mg, found a 10.6 % average loss among those who completed it⁴². At 68 weeks on semaglutide 2.4 mg, STEP 1 found −14.9 % against −2.4 % on placebo, with a lifestyle programme in both groups⁴³. Results differ by person.
